Create a Compelling and Keyword-Focused Title<\/h2>\n<p>Optimizing your title tag has always been one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/learn\/seo\/title-tag\" target=\"_blank\">most important aspects of on-page SEO<\/a>\u00a0(only second to the overall content on the page). \u00a0If you didn&#8217;t include the exact keyword in the title, then your site wouldn&#8217;t rank well for that keyword even if it had great content and links.<\/p>\n<p>But all\u00a0that&#8217;s changed in the past couple of years as Google has made a shift towards <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantic_search\">semantic search<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Semantic search\u00a0seeks to accurately measure a\u00a0person&#8217;s <strong>intent<\/strong> and <strong>context<\/strong> so that the search engines can serve up the most relevant results to the searcher.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if the searcher\u00a0wants to learn how to do yoga (intent), so that they can sleep better (context), then the article that is the most relevant and popular will rank the highest &#8212; Create a Compelling Description<\/h2>\n<p>When optimizing their\u00a0blog posts for SEO, many bloggers skip over optimizing the description.<\/p>\n<p>This is a big mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Although optimizing the\u00a0page\u00a0description doesn&#8217;t directly help with rankings, it\u00a0can help increase click through rates to your website.\u00a0So optimizing the description is a good practice if you want to attract more visitors to your website.<\/p>\n<p>Think of the title and description as an advertisement\u00a0for your blog post. \u00a0If your ad isn&#8217;t relevant and compelling then people won&#8217;t click through to your blog post no matter how great the content is.<\/p>\n<p>A good description will speak directly to the searchers pain, problem or desire. \u00a0For example, in my content marketing tools article, I start the description with a question with addresses a pain point regarding content marketing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/yoastseodescription2.jpg\" alt=\"yoastseodescription2\" width=\"591\" height=\"521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/yoastseodescription2.jpg 1011w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/yoastseodescription2-300x265.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/yoastseodescription2-768x678.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/yoastseodescription2-700x618.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can use Yoast SEO to optimize the description directly within the blog post. \u00a0I would suggest using this feature for every blog post that you create.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"url\">3. Add\u00a0related keywords<\/h2>\n<p>One of the best ways to attract more traffic to your blog posts is to use long tail keywords &#8212; keywords that are related to your main topic keyword in some way.<\/p>\n<p>Long tail keywords get less traffic than your primary keywords, but combined they can drive 70% of the overall traffic to your website.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/longtail-1024x887.gif\" alt=\"long tail keywords\" width=\"407\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/longtail-1024x887.gif 1024w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/longtail-300x260.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/longtail-768x665.gif 768w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/longtail-700x606.gif 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can get a good amount of related keyword ideas by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/adwords.google.ca\/KeywordPlanner\" target=\"_blank\">Google Keyword Planner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Simply search\u00a0your primary keyword into the search box (i.e content marketing), and then click on &#8220;keyword ideas&#8221;. \u00a0You&#8217;ll get a list of all the top related keywords.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lsikeywords-1024x772.jpg\" alt=\"lsi keywords\" width=\"1024\" height=\"772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lsikeywords-1024x772.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lsikeywords-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lsikeywords-768x579.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lsikeywords-700x528.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d recommend sprinkling\u00a03-5 related keywords in each of your\u00a0blog posts, so that you can get additional traffic to your site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pagespeed\">8. Focus on page loading times<\/h2>\n<p>Google stated\u00a0that they <a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2010\/04\/using-site-speed-in-web-search-ranking.html\" target=\"_blank\">use page loading times<\/a> as one of their ranking factors.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have a site that loads fast, then\u00a0it can hurt your chances of ranking well in search.<\/p>\n<p>One of the tools you can use to see how well your site is performing is gtmetrix.com. \u00a0It will grade your website based on several\u00a0factors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gtmetrixpagespeed-1024x409.jpg\" alt=\"page speed seo\" width=\"668\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gtmetrixpagespeed-1024x409.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gtmetrixpagespeed-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gtmetrixpagespeed-768x306.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gtmetrixpagespeed-700x279.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If your pagespeed score is low, then use the suggestions\u00a0GTmetrix gives you to improve your scores. \u00a0Your score doesn&#8217;t have to be perfect to rank well, but if your pages take more than 8\u00a0seconds to load, then it could be a problem.<\/p>\n<p>I use WordPress plugins called <a href=\"https:\/\/en-ca.wordpress.org\/plugins\/bwp-minify\/\" target=\"_blank\">Better WordPress Minify<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/en-ca.wordpress.org\/plugins\/w3-total-cache\/\" target=\"_blank\">W3 Total Cache<\/a> to increase my pagespeed score. \u00a0It combines and minifies your javscript and css files. Before using these plugins my pages were loading much slower and the pagespeed score was poor.<\/p>\n<p>By activating these plugins and making a few tweaks you can easily improve your page loading times.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"socialsharing\">9. Add a social sharing bar to your posts<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past few years, there&#8217;s been a lot of debate about whether or not social affects search rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Some authoritative sites like Moz, have shown that there is a high correlation between social shares and rankings.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 2014, Matt Cutts posted a video which he said that it has no influence on SEO:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/udqtSM-6QbQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So\u00a0has anything changed since? \u00a0Does social affect SEO in 2016?<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/methode\/status\/740017738446344192\" target=\"_blank\">recent tweet by Gary Illyes<\/a> &#8212; a spokesperson for Google &#8212; it doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>However, just because Google says it doesn&#8217;t affect search engine rankings, doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t use it as a way to <strong>indirectly<\/strong> influence search rankings.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you write and publish a blog post and it gets hundreds or thousands of shares, then it&#8217;s likely that some of those people will also link to your content from their sites.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the more your content gets shared across social media, the more people will become aware of your brand and site and will start to link to your content more often.<\/p>\n<p>So although getting more social shares may not directly influence rankings, it can help you drive more traffic and links to your content.<\/p>\n<h3>How do you get\u00a0more social shares?<\/h3>\n<p>To get more social shares, you need to make it easier for your readers to share your content. \u00a0To do this consider adding a\u00a0social floating bar\u00a0to your site.<\/p>\n<p>The social sharing tool\u00a0I use is called &#8220;share&#8221; by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sumome.com\" target=\"_blank\">SumoMe<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a free tool that will allow you to quickly create social sharing bars anywhere on your site. \u00a0To do this, you&#8217;ll first need to create an account at sumome.com, install the\u00a0SumoMe plugin and then activate the floating bar.<\/p>\n<p>What I like about this tool is how simple it is to customize everything. \u00a0You can easily change the display and place the share buttons in many different places.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3429\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/sharesumome-1024x628.png\" alt=\"share sumo me\" width=\"574\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/sharesumome-1024x628.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/sharesumome-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/sharesumome-768x471.png 768w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/sharesumome-700x429.png 700w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/sharesumome.png 1824w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"first100words\">10. Add\u00a0internal links<\/h2>\n<p>Linking to\u00a0relevant pages from your blog post is one of the easiest and most effective ways to optimize your site for SEO.<\/p>\n<p>I use a WordPress plugin called <a href=\"https:\/\/en-ca.wordpress.org\/plugins\/contextual-related-posts\/\">contextual related posts<\/a>\u00a0for creating relevant internal links. \u00a0Once you activate the plugin it will automatically create thumbnails of the related posts.<\/p>\n<p>When linking manually to other pages on your site within the body, use related keywords and phrases that would add value for your readers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"articlelength\">12. Focus on\u00a0creating longer articles<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.serpiq.com\/how-important-is-content-length-why-data-driven-seo-trumps-guru-opinions\/\">SerpIQ did a study<\/a> which showed that longer content outperformed shorter content in the search results.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the top 10 results, the average length of the articles in the top 3 positions were approximately 2400-2500 words.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/averagecontentlength.jpg\" alt=\"averagecontentlength\" width=\"601\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/averagecontentlength.jpg 601w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/averagecontentlength-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.simplestartup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/averagecontentlength-600x368.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s generally a good idea to write longer articles (2000+\u00a0words) if you want to rank well in\u00a0Google and other search engines &#8212; especially if you&#8217;re trying to rank for a competitive keyword.<\/p>\n<p>But does that mean that you always need to create longer content in order to rank well?<\/p>\n<p>Not necessarily.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a shorter article can be sufficient, as long as it satisfies the searcher&#8217;s need. \u00a0In other words, if the searcher gets what they&#8217;re looking for when they visit your page, they are much more likely to share it and this too can\u00a0lead to more links, engagement, and therefore higher rankings.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to keep in mind that <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/great-content-long-form-content\" target=\"_blank\">longer content doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean better content<\/a>. \u00a0If your content is long but lacks substance and doesn&#8217;t fulfill the searchers need, then it won&#8217;t really matter because people won&#8217;t read your content or share it.<\/p>\n<p>I stick to writing longer articles because it tends to resonate more with my audience in search and social. \u00a0But if you feel you can write shorter but compelling articles that will satisfy the searchers need and can still generate a lot of shares and links, then you should still be fine ranking well in search.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion:<\/h2>\n<p>Improving your on-page SEO can get your site ranked higher in search without much time or effort. \u00a0By\u00a0implementing these SEO\u00a0strategies you should be able to improve the overall user experience on your site, get more social shares, and drive more traffic.<\/p>\n<p>To summarize, here&#8217;s how you can\u00a0improve your on-page SEO:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create compelling and keyword-focused titles<\/li>\n<li>Create a compelling description<\/li>\n<li>Optimize your URL<\/li>\n<li>Optimize the\u00a0alt tags for your images<\/li>\n<li>Wrap your title in an h1 tag<\/li>\n<li>Add embeddable content<\/li>\n<li>Add related keywords<\/li>\n<li>Focus on page loading times<\/li>\n<li>Add social sharing bar<\/li>\n<li>Add your focus keyword in the first 100 words<\/li>\n<li>Add\u00a0internal links<\/li>\n<li>Focus on creating longer articles<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a blogger or content marketer, you probably know how challenging it can be to rank your content in search. \u00a0You may have even tried some\u00a0on-page SEO\u00a0techniques to help improve your rankings.
